This Is Not Good

The U.S. government is giving away its control of the Internet. Who is getting it and why?

ICANN to Take Control of Web in 2015
From Misguided Children.com comes this HUGE story is seems the Obama administration is about one year away from relinquishing a hefty portion of the U.S. government’s control over the Internet. This has sparked a worldwide debate over the repercussions, and vital issues such as the freedoms of speech, press, and information play key roles.

Also present is the fear that U.S. citizens may end up with less Internet freedom than we have now, and websites that the authorities consider inappropriate will be blocked. What a huge story this is for bin readers and bloggers, can you imagine this horror story?

That is certainly a possible scenario, but before we address the major consequences of what’s happening, we need to analyze exactly who the government is giving the Internet to.

In 2015, it will be handed over to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).

The organization is currently responsible for managing the DNS root and the numbering system of IP addresses, as well as the management of top-level domain names, which include. .com and .net URLs. ICANN is an American entity which is subject to United States law, so the government will still be able to indirectly control some of what they handing over.
Internet censorship is one of the most talked about possibilities of the decision. While ICANN is technically an American organization, there is a high likelihood they will be pressured to take part in globalizing Internet ownership.
